Frequently asked questions

Where does OpenForecast get its weather data?
From the National Weather Service (NWS) API at api.weather.gov. The NWS is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). OpenForecast is not affiliated with or endorsed by either agency.
How current are the forecasts?
Each page is built from a stored NWS snapshot and shows when that snapshot was taken. When you open a city, state or alerts page, your browser also requests the latest data from api.weather.gov and replaces the snapshot if the request succeeds.
Is OpenForecast an official source of weather warnings?
No. For official warnings, check weather.gov and your local authorities, and follow instructions from emergency officials.
Which cities are included?
Every U.S. city with at least 20,000 residents in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 population estimates: 1,923 cities across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. For any other U.S. place, use the Use my location button.
Does OpenForecast store my location?
No. The Use my location button sends rounded coordinates from your browser directly to api.weather.gov. Nothing is sent to or stored by OpenForecast.
Can I see temperatures in Celsius?
Yes. Use the °C button on a city page or on this page. The choice is saved only in your browser.
